AGREEMENT ESTABLISHES URBAN PARK FOR WEYBURN

Environment Minister John Nilson and Weyburn Mayor Debra Button have signed an agreement to establish the Tatagwa Parkway Urban Park.

“I believe that urban parks contribute to our quality of life and sense of well-being,” Nilson said.  “Saskatchewan people care deeply about our parks and green spaces and there is no doubt that Weyburn loves this natural setting.  This investment will provide opportunities for residents and visitors alike to enjoy outdoor recreation and will contribute to a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.”

“The opportunity for the City of Weyburn to enter into this exciting new funding partnership will permit us to further capitalize on the initiative, creative thinking and spirit of community co-operation that has allowed Tatagwa Parkway to become the reality it is today,” Weyburn Mayor Debra Button said.

Tatagwa Parkway is made up of 180 acres of land adjacent to the Souris River and winds through the City of Weyburn.  This area is dedicated to the preservation of native flora and fauna and is accessible from the downtown area.

Tatagwa Parkway is one of seven urban park partnerships in Saskatchewan.  The other parks are Wascana Centre in Regina, Wakamow Valley in Moose Jaw, Meewasin Valley in Saskatoon, Chinook Parkway in Swift Current, Pêhonân Parkway in Prince Albert and Battlefords River Valley.

Tatagwa Parkway is a member of the Association of Saskatchewan Urban Parks and Conservation Agencies.

The Saskatchewan Government will provide $39,000 this year.  In future years, funding will be determined on a per capita basis.  The City of Weyburn will match this annual funding.

The City of Weyburn will be responsible for the development, maintenance and operation of the urban park.  The Saskatchewan Government will also participate in a seven-member board that will make recommendations regarding implementation of the Tatagwa Master Plan.
