STUDENT EMPLOYMENT GRANT APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED

Applications from employers who want to take part in the Student Employment Experience and Green Team student employment programs for 2007-08 are now being accepted.

Since the introduction of the Student Employment Experience last year, 725 students have gained quality employment in Saskatchewan.  The Green Team program was introduced in 2004 to engage Saskatchewan youth in the environmental economy and has helped fund positions for over 300 students.  Since 1995, the provincial government has helped create over 7,000 career-quality jobs for students.

“The Student Employment Experience and Green Team programs are helping young people, communities and businesses build stronger futures,” Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel said.  “Through these programs, the Government of Saskatchewan has been able to create attractive opportunities for Saskatchewan youth.”

Employers that are approved for Student Employment Experience subsidies will be granted up to $3,500 for full-time student positions and up to $2,000 for part-time student positions.  Green Team grants of either $1,000 to hire high school students, or $2,500 to hire post-secondary students, are available for employers providing jobs related to the environmental industry.

“As youth, we are seeking opportunities to develop skills and build experience,” Provincial Youth Advisory Committee co-chair Rick Rieger said.  “The Government of Saskatchewan is helping us bridge the transition from school to work.”

Students in the past year’s Student Employment Experience and Green team programs participated in a survey.  Over 90 per cent of these young respondents said career quality is their top priority.

The deadline for Student Employment Experience applications from employers is March 1, 2007.  The deadline for Green Team applications is March 15, 2007.  Adjudication committees will be selecting proposals that provide the best development experience for a student.
