News Release - July 21, 2009 MANAGING OUR FISHERIES FOR TOMORROW – PUBLIC COMMENTS WELCOMESaskatchewan people are proud of the fact that we have some of the best fishing in the world; our challenge is keeping it that way. The Ministry of Environment has been working with the public, First Nations and Métis organizations and stakeholders from across the province to develop a new Provincial Fisheries Management Plan. The plan will maintain the traditional and cultural activities we enjoy today, while ensuring sustainable fish stocks and economic benefits for everyone in the province. The province has now released a draft of the plan and the public has the opportunity to review the draft and provide input until September 30, 2009. You can read the plan and submit your comments at http://www.environment.gov.sk.ca/fisheriesmanagementplan. "Our plan will guide fisheries management in Saskatchewan over the next decade and beyond," Environment Minister Nancy Heppner said. "It will build on partnerships and ensure our fisheries are used in a sustainable way, promoting economic and social growth for the benefit of all the people of Saskatchewan. I encourage everyone who has an interest in our province's fishery to review the plan and provide comments." The province plans to release the final plan in spring 2010. -30- For more information, contact:
