SASKATCHEWAN EXPLORES FOOD-PROCESSING OPPORTUNITIES IN CHILE

Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall and representatives from

provincial companies have completed the Chilean portion of a 12 day

Canadian Agriculture Ministers' Mission to Latin America.

Travelling with Upshall are: Peter McCann, Ag West Biotech Inc.; Perry

Wilkes, Canada Livestock Services; Mark Pickard, Infra Ready Products;

Ed Johnson and Paul Chessman, Genex Swine Group; Rodrigo Yanez, Yanez

International Commodities Ltd.; and Inge Ryan and Steve Sousa,

representing a number of other Saskatchewan companies through the

Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP).

"Chile has had strong economic growth over the past years lead by a

boom in exports," Upshall said. "It presents very good trade

opportunities for the Saskatchewan agri-food industry."

Chile, with a population of nearly 15 million, purchased agri-food

products from Saskatchewan valued at approximately $45 million in

1997. In addition to traditional grains, Chile has purchased canary

seed, pulses, mustard, pork and beef products from Saskatchewan over

recent years.

"Our Saskatchewan businesses have met with key Chilean business people

who have expressed interest in the products and services we have to

offer," Upshall said. "They are all excited about the new

opportunities they have found on this mission and will follow up on

their prospects, after their return home."

Opportunities in Chile for Saskatchewan companies include

livestock and livestock genetics, biotechnology and special

crops.

Upshall said that the Chilean portion of the mission focused on

building relationships with the food processing industry. As

part of the visit, Upshall addressed SEPACH, the association of

Chilean food processors.

The minister and the Saskatchewan companies involved in the

mission also got an inside view of a pasta and a meat processing

plant and met with a variety of buyers and food processors.

"The mission provided an opportunity to promote the Saskatchewan

industry and highlight partnerships and strategic alliance

opportunities with Chilean companies," Upshall said. "These

missions build understanding, understanding builds friendship and

trust, and trust builds business."
