CELEBRATING IN MOTION MONTH IN SASKATCHEWAN

October is being celebrated as in motion month in Saskatchewan to raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity.

Saskatchewan in motion, the province and in motion partners, communities, workplaces and schools are working together to take action to increase the overall physical activity levels of people in the province for better health.

"In order to achieve the excellent benefits of physical activity, such as improved health, better fitness, enhanced self-esteem and boosted energy levels, we must first make the effort," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "I encourage Saskatchewan people, young and old, to take this opportunity to make some form of physical activity a regular part of their daily lives."

"In motion month is a great time for everyone to join the thousands of Saskatchewan people in all corners of our province who have 'Joined the Movement' of physical activity for better health," Saskatchewan in motion manager Cathie Kryzanowski said. "If you are already 'in motion,' become a leader. Encourage the people you care about to take part in community-based sport, recreation and other physical activity opportunities."

Saskatchewan in motion is funded in part, through Culture, Youth and Recreation's Community Initiative Fund. When in motion was launched in 2003, a target was set to increase physical activity rates by 10 per cent by 2005. To date, there are 142 communities, 306 schools, 336 workplaces that have joined the in motion movement.

Studies show that increased physical activity can reduce stress, help maintain healthy body weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease, leads to better poster and balance, creates increased energy, and improves relaxation and sleep.
