News Release - October 9, 2007 LEGISLATION TO FURTHER PROTECT SASKATCHEWAN CONSUMERS COMES INTO FORCEAmendments to The Consumer Protection Act that will substantially improve protections available to consumers and strengthen confidence in the marketplace will come into force on October 15, 2007. The amendments cover a broad range of goods and services and set out new rules regarding agreements that are entered into over the phone or by mail. This legislation also includes provisions for agreements that involve future performance, delivery, or payments and sets out new requirements for agreements regarding specific goods and services, such as travel clubs and personal development services (i.e. health clubs, talent and modelling agencies, sports and dance studios). "Saskatchewan consumers face a marketplace that is rapidly changing as a result of the introduction of new technologies and of increasingly more complex and sophisticated products and services," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "These amendments update the current legislation to make it more responsive to these changes and promotes consumer confidence in the marketplace." The Consumer Protection Amendment Act, 2006 was introduced during the 2005 fall session of the Legislative Assembly. The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee on Human Services after first reading and public hearings were held on February 20 and 22, 2006.
