GOVERNMENT PROCLAIMS SASKATCHEWAN CO-OPERATIVES WEEK

Enterprise Minister Ken Cheveldayoff has proclaimed October 11-17 as Saskatchewan Co-operatives Week to celebrate the continued economic development being provided by the Saskatchewan co-operatives. Cheveldayoff made the announcement today during a flag raising ceremony held in the rotunda of the Legislature.

Saskatchewan co-operatives are celebrating National Co-operatives Week, October 11-17, an annual event that celebrates the roles co-ops play in providing sustainable jobs by investing in our communities.

"Co-ops are involved in virtually every economic sector in our province and these challenging economic times provide an opportunity for the co-ops to showcase their successful business models," Cheveldayoff said. "Saskatchewan's co-ops have played an important role in the economic development of our province and we look forward to a continued partnership in economic development."

Saskatchewan has more than 1,100 co-ops operating in virtually every economic and social sector including agricultural marketing and processing, community development, financial services, retail services, childcare, health care and recreation.

The Government of Saskatchewan also supports economic development and diversification in Saskatchewan through the development and expansion of co-operative enterprises and collaboration with the Co-operatives Sector Team.

Co-operatives currently provide jobs for more than 15,000 people, control billions of dollars in assets, and represent more than a quarter of the province's top 100 businesses.
