News Release - June 23, 2005 TRAIN SAFETY ACTIVITY BOOK PROMOTES YOUTH AWARENESS
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation has produced a book to promote train safety and awareness among youth living in key areas where provincial shortline railways operate.
The Train Safety Activity Book, developed in partnership with Saskatchewan Railways and University of Regina Education students, is designed to educate students in Grades 3 to 5 about the dangers associated with trains and to reduce the risk of accident and injury. "Railways are a vital link in our provincial transportation network, but they can present a danger to children who don't treat railway property and equipment with the respect it requires," Prince Albert Carlton MLA Myron Kowalsky said on behalf of Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag. "This book is meant to assist parents and teachers in educating our children about these dangers so we can ensure their safety." Approximately 4,000 copies of the activity book, along with 300 copies of an accompanying Teacher's Guide, have been distributed to schools located in shortline operating areas. The shortlines themselves contributed valuable input for the book, as well as assistance in the distribution and awareness strategies.
