PREMIER ANNOUNCES CABINET CHANGE

Premier Lorne Calvert today announced the appointment of Warren McCall, MLA Regina Elphinstone-Centre as Minister responsible for Corrections and Public Safety, taking over from Kevin Yates, MLA Regina Dewdney who has left the position due to personal circumstances.

"Mr. Yates' contribution was much appreciated in his time leading this department," Calvert said. "He has been instrumental in co-ordinating our government's flood assistance and forest fire management efforts during a very challenging time. We welcome his continued and positive contribution as MLA for Regina Dewdney and in the role as Deputy House Leader."

McCall was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in February, 2001 and re-elected in November, 2003. He will continue to lead the Government's Accessibility and Affordability Review of Post-Secondary Education initiative, is Chair of the Saskatchewan Legislature Standing Committee on the Economy, served as Government Caucus Deputy Whip, Government Caucus Deputy Chair and as Chair of the Legislature's Standing Committee on Crowns and Central Agencies.

"Mr. McCall is an active participant in his community and has always spoken passionately about the need for change for those less fortunate," Calvert said. "We know his dedication to these strong values and his commitment to the betterment of society will be well positioned in this new role."

His major policy interests have been in the areas of urban revitalization, housing, cultural relations and community economic development. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Canadian History from the University of Regina.
