SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT CONSULTATIONS UNDERWAY

Consultations on addiction issues have begun. Graham Addley, Legislative Secretary to the Premier on Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment is holding consultations with interested groups and individuals in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, La Ronge, Swift Current and Regina over the next few weeks.

Concerned parents, addictions supervisors and counsellors, educators, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder groups, municipal leaders and Tribal Councils are among those who plan to participate, or have already participated, in consultations. Meetings have already been held in North Battleford and Yorkton.

"We need to know what programs and services work well in each community, and where we can do more," Addley said. "For instance, we know there is more work to do in the area of crystal meth. By consulting with affected families and direct service providers, we will find out what recommendations they have to better address this problem and other addictions issues."

The province's plan for crystal meth identifies four key areas of strategic focus: prevention; treatment; education; and reducing drug supply (supply interdiction). Health Minister John Nilson feels that continuing consultations are crucial to the implementation of the government's strategy.

"Affected families and the program staff who work with people with addictions have a great deal of wisdom and experience to share," Addley said. "Through these consultations, we continue to learn how to ensure all Saskatchewan residents can improve and maintain their health and well-being."
