PLANT A FREE SEEDLING FROM SASKPOWER

With spring on the way, SaskPower is offering its customers a bur oak or a green ash seedling, grown at the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse in Estevan.

"Minimizing our impact on the environment is a responsibility that the provincial government and SaskPower take very seriously – and every resident of our province can also pitch in and help. Seedlings grown at the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse - and planted by customers across Saskatchewan - absorb carbon dioxide from our environment, and help reduce the effects of the coal-fired generation that we in Saskatchewan depend on to reliably power our province," Crown Investments Corporation Minister Maynard Sonntag said.

The bur oak and green ash seedlings will be available from May 5-9 at any of SaskPower's 37 Customer Services offices, as well as locations in Coronach, Esterhazy and Ile-a-la-Crosse. Information on how to care for the seedling will also be provided.

"Since 1991, the Greenhouse has distributed over 3.5 million tree and shrub seedlings free of charge – mostly to not-for-profit agencies, service clubs, conservation agencies and individual land owners interested in preserving and enhancing Saskatchewan's natural landscape," SaskPower Shand Greenhouse manager Debbie Nielsen said.

Educating the public on the issue of climate change is an important part of the work at the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse. Staff members offer a free, interactive Energy and our Environment presentation to students in Grades 5 and 6, in addition to the annual Energy and our Environment poster contest, which encourages students to create posters with ideas on addressing the issue of climate change.
