SASKATCHEWAN VOLUNTEER MEDAL RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart today announced the names of 10 recipients of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal.

The Medal recognizes outstanding volunteer service or exceptional community involvement.

“The Volunteer Medal recipients are an example to others for the tremendous work they do,” Barnhart said.  “Their dedication is inspiring and demonstrates how people from all walks of life can do more to enrich the lives of Saskatchewan people.”

The 2006 recipients are:

• Shirley Andrist, retired teacher, Estevan
• Graham G. Barker, business entrepreneur, Regina
• Irene Deck, business entrepreneur, Regina
• Staff Sergeant Lorne G. Gelowitz, police officer, Saskatoon
• Keith Knox, historian, Regina
• Om Kochar, service industry employee, Saskatoon
• Jean Miskiman, bookkeeper, Nipawin
• Donald J. O’Hearne, C.D., aviation specialist, Moose Jaw
• Miriam Spenrath. O.S.U., retired teacher, Muenster
• Gordon A. Wilson, retired community leader, Saskatoon

The recipients will receive their awards on April 25, 2007 in Regina.

Recipients are selected by the Saskatchewan Honours Advisory Council from nominations submitted by the public.  Including the 10 new recipients, the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal has been presented to 104 outstanding individuals since 1995.
