CULTURE, YOUTH AND RECREATION MINISTER TOURS WITH YOUTH IN PRINCE ALBERT AND AREA

Saskatchewan Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel is touring with Prince Albert youth today to learn more about how young people are engaged in positive activities that benefit Saskatchewan communities.

"These tours are a tremendous opportunity to see how the policies and support from the department are put into action and producing results," Hagel said. "The activities are involving young people and preparing them to lead us into the future. It's very exciting."

The Department of Culture, Youth and Recreation oversees programs including the Student Employment Experience (SEE), the Green Team, Saskatchewan Youth Project Awards and the Provincial Youth Advisory Committee.

At an event held today at Prince Albert's Marlboro Inn, members of youth organizations, youth program participants and employers were able to meet with Minister Hagel and Saskatchewan Culture, Youth and Recreation policy makers. The event was an opportunity to share their stories of challenge, hard work and success.

"The Student Employment Experience allowed us to hire a student to assist in the community gardens program that focuses on relieving poverty and hunger concerns in the Prince Albert area," Community Garden Manager, Linda Fidler said. "We likely couldn't have operated the program this summer without a SEE student. It was a really big help."

The minister's tour of youth programs also included a stop in Shell Lake this morning. Minister Hagel went to Shell Lake to see Green Team funding at work as the Natural Builder Assistants use straw in the building of environmentally friendly housing.
