MANUFACTURING AND NEW CAR SALES NUMBERS SHOW CONTINUED STRENGTH

There is more great news on the economic front in Saskatchewan today, with both manufacturing shipments and new motor vehicle sales up considerably according to Statistics Canada.

In 2007, manufacturing shipments were up by 1.8 per cent over 2006, the fifth-best percentage increase in the nation. December 2007 over December 2006 shipments also showed improvement, increasing by 11.2 per cent, the third-highest growth rate of provinces on a monthly basis.

"These economic statistics are encouraging, as they confirm we have a growing and vibrant manufacturing industry that is competitive nationally," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "Increased manufacturing activity is a sign of a growing and diverse economy, and it means more job opportunities for Saskatchewan people."

New motor vehicle sales figures are stellar, with sales up 14.1 per cent in 2007, the second-highest among the provinces. On a monthly basis, new motor vehicle sales increased by 13.1 per cent in the month of December over December, the highest increase in Canada.

"It takes a lot of consumer confidence to make a big purchase like a new vehicle, and the huge improvement in new car sales this past year point to a growing optimism in Saskatchewan," Stewart said. "We have one of the best economies in Canada right now. Our government is working to ensure this momentum continues and that all Saskatchewan people enjoy the benefits of a growing economy."
