News Release - September 8, 2003 SASKATCHEWAN LITERACY DAY AND ADULT LEARNERS' WEEK PROCLAIMED
Saskatchewan Learning Minister Judy Junor has proclaimed September 8th as Literacy Day in Saskatchewan, and September 7th-13th as Saskatchewan Adult Learners' Week.
"These proclamations honour and support learners and the many groups and organizations committed to promoting and improving learning across Canada," Junor said. "Literacy is the key to individual growth and to full participation in society. It opens the door to lifelong learning and is key to a competitive workforce and economy." Saskatchewan has issued the proclamations in support of a worldwide strategy initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its member states to increase public awareness around the importance of literacy and support for lifelong learning. International Adult Literacy Day (September 8th) celebrations are held around the world in conjunction with the 2003 International Adult Learners' Week and mark the launch of the United Nations Decade for Literacy (2003 - 2012). In Canada, this initiative is being co-ordinated through the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. "International Literacy Day helps us to create awareness of literacy as an issue that affects all of us," Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Literacy Network Debbie Purton said. "We want all of Saskatchewan's people to see themselves as learners along the path of lifelong learning." "Adult Learners' Week helps us to emphasize that it's never too late to learn," Division Head of the Seniors' Education Centre at the University of Regina's Centre for Continuing Education Kerrie Strathy said. "Everyone should get involved in lifelong learning activities to overcome the challenges of life and have fun. We believe in providing learning opportunities for all ages." The Saskatchewan Government provides $1.1 million a year to post-secondary institutions and community-based organizations to deliver programs that develop literacy skills. More than 4,000 learners participate annually in Saskatchewan's literacy programs. Saskatchewan Literacy Day and Saskatchewan Adult Learners' Week are being marked by local events in communities throughout the province. -30- For More Information, Contact:
