News Release - August 12, 2008 GOVERNMENT REPAYS FAMILY FOR OUT-OF-COUNTRY MEDICAL COSTSHealth Minister Don McMorris today announced a payment to the family of the late Doug Bonderud for medical expenses incurred in the United States. "My heart goes out to the Bonderud family," McMorris said. "This was a very sad, unfortunate and exceptional case. Not only did Doug Bonderud struggle with cancer, but he also struggled with our health care system." Bonderud received out-of-country treatment in 2006 and passed away later that year. "In Doug's life and death struggle, the Bonderuds incurred significant financial hardship, a legacy they are still dealing with today. I have directed that certain medical expenses be paid, and that the ministry undertake a review of the out-of-country coverage procedures and policies," McMorris said. "While no amount of money will address the loss of Doug's life, I hope that something good can come from his death. His case points to the need to take a hard look at the health care system through the patient's eyes. Improving the patient experience with our healthcare system is a key focus of the review to which government has committed." -30- For more information, contact: Joan Petrie |
