SASKATCHEWAN GOVERNMENT GRANTS 500 GENERAL PROFICIENCY AWARDS

The Ministry of Education has awarded 500 students from across Saskatchewan $400 scholarships through the Saskatchewan General Proficiency Awards program.

"The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes the hard work and dedication of our students toward academic achievement," Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz said. "This scholarship is provided by the Ministry of Education to reward excellence and to encourage young people in their pursuit of post-secondary education."

Award recipients have received letters of congratulations from the Minister of Education. The scholarships will be made available by the ministry later this month.

The General Proficiency Awards, totalling $200,000 annually, are granted to graduating students from provincial schools based on criteria established by the Ministry of Education.

In early spring, the ministry allocates a number of awards to each school division based on the number of grade 12 students in that division. Each school designates their best students based on Grade 12 marks, and advises the ministry in September of their nominations. The Government of Saskatchewan offers the General Proficiency Awards to the Grade 12 winners as a contribution to their post-secondary education.
