SASKATCHEWAN WORKERS EARNING MORE THAN EVER BEFORE

In the face of a global recession, average weekly earnings in Saskatchewan have reached an all-time high of $808.82.

Among all provinces, Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings occupied the third highest position after Alberta ($941.80) and Ontario ($853.43).

"This is certainly a positive indicator for our province as the global economy slowly turns around," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "With the lowest unemployment rate in the nation and with our workers earning more than ever, Saskatchewan is well positioned heading into the recovery."

Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings for August 2009 saw an increase by 0.7 per cent month over month and by 1.3 per cent over August 2008. Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings were the second highest in western Canada, ahead of Manitoba ($771.59) and British Columbia ($802.70).

Saskatchewan recorded a percentage decrease of 0.1 per cent in the number of occupied payroll jobs in August 2009 compared to a year ago and compared to the national average decline of 3.0 per cent. All provinces except Prince Edward Island experienced decreases.

"Our government is very sensitive to workers and businesses impacted by the global recession," Norris said. "Our Rapid Response Teams offer programs and services such as the federal work sharing program and provincial skills training to help ensure that our province has the skilled and talented people it needs as the recovery gains momentum."

Norris also pointed to the more than 5,900 vacancies on saskjobs.ca as a sign of opportunity for Saskatchewan workers.
