PROVINCE IMPROVING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN SASKATOON

A new $20 million mental health facility to be built at the Royal University Hospital will create a better treatment environment that separates young people from adults.

Construction is expected to begin this year on the new building, which will bring together services from Saskatoon City Hospital and the Royal University Hospital.

"We are creating a better environment for those dealing with serious mental health issues," Healthy Living Services Minister Graham Addley said. "The result will be a modern, client-centred facility that works better as a treatment centre, as a learning environment for the health professions and as a safe place for clients and health workers."

"Mental health clients and staff are excited to be one step closer to moving into their new centre at the Royal University Hospital," Saskatoon Regional Health Authority chair Darlene Eberle said. "This new facility is designed to enhance best practices in mental health treatment and allows the Region to provide client-centred care in a nurturing environment."

The new mental health facility will accommodate 54 adult in-patients and 10 child and youth in-patients in a separate unit. The new building will go up on riverside land next to the Hantelman Building.
