GOVERNMENT FUNDS FASD AWARENESS AND PREVENTION

Agencies that promote awareness and prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the province are receiving $165,000 in funding from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

"FASD has far reaching impacts in our communities," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) Christine Tell said. "That's why our government believes it's important to help families living with FASD while also raising awareness about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy."

SLGA is providing $68,420 to the FASD Support Network of Saskatchewan. The funding will be used to continue a program aimed at raising FASD awareness among post-secondary students who are studying for careers where they may come into frequent contact with individuals with FASD. Funding will also support the development and distribution of FASD resources to Saskatchewan communities.

The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute (SPI) will receive $96,580 from SLGA. The funding will be used to develop a new public awareness campaign expected to be unveiled next year. The funding will also support ongoing SPI initiatives such as regional FASD support committees and the FASD Speakers' Bureau, which focuses on increasing FASD education among front-line workers, caregivers and professionals.

Saskatchewan Prevention Institute Executive Director Noreen Agrey said continued support from the government will help ensure a multi-faceted approach to FASD prevention continues.

"FASD is the leading known cause of preventable disability in children in our province," Agrey said. "The funding received from SLGA enables the Prevention Institute to continue to raise awareness about FASD and help women make informed choices about avoiding alcohol during pregnancy."
