News Release - July 22, 2003 PROVINCE SUPPORTS NEW BSE MEASURE
Saskatchewan fully supports new BSE measures for the removal of Specified Risk Materials from the food chain.
The new measure, announced by the federal government on Friday, will involve the removal of Specified Risk Materials, which may include the brain, spinal cord, eyes and tonsils, from cattle over 30 months of age, as well as parts of the small intestine from animals under 30 months. Federal regulations and specific details of the measure will be communicated to the industry in the near future. "Canada's approach to food safety is among the most effective in the world," Deputy Premier and Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization Minister Clay Serby said. "This new measure, endorsed by the federal government and all provinces and territories, indicates our shared commitment to further enhance the already high standards that exist in Canada's meat industry." Serby noted that the province is discussing the implementation of the new standards with Saskatchewan's meat processing industry. On June 25th, 2003, the International Team reviewing Canada's response to the BSE situation released its report and recommendations, one of which calls for the complete removal of Specified Risk Materials from the food chain. "This positive and timely response to the recommendation by the international review team should be an important consideration in re-establishing normal trade relations," Serby said. -30- For More Information, Contact:
