GOVERNMENTS OF CANADA AND SASKATCHEWAN INVEST IN VONDA’S INFRASTRUCTURE

The Town of Vonda is moving forward with arena upgrades thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.

Today, Brad Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, on behalf of Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Social Services Minister and Humboldt MLA Donna Harpauer, announced funding for upgrades to the arena that will create jobs for the community.

"I'm pleased to announce our Government's support for Vonda, as these arena upgrades will help ensure that our community has access to this great facility for many years to come," said Trost.

"This investment will benefit the Town of Vonda and allow for much-needed improvements to the local arena," Harpauer said on behalf of Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison. "Working with our federal and municipal partners, we are helping ensure Saskatchewan people benefit and that Saskatchewan continues to move forward."

The Town of Vonda is building an addition to its arena, repairing the roof and installing new siding, doors and windows. Extensive improvements will also include adding new washroom facilities and expanding dressing room space, as well as installing new boards, glass and energy-efficient lighting, and upgrading the mechanical and heating systems. These renovations will improve energy efficiency, lower operating costs, increase usable space and enhance safety and structural integrity.

Funding of $215,382 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Government of Saskatchewan is funding $101,882 and the Town of Vonda is committing $332,736 to the upgrades, for a total project cost of $650,000.

"The Recreational Infrastructure Canada program will revitalize the heart and soul of our community," Vonda Mayor Dan Sembalerus said. "It is the first step in reigniting our community spirit by turning our arena into a multi-purpose facility which will strengthen the level of physical fitness in our current and future generations."

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
