$10.5 MILLION RENOVATION FOR LUMSDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Today Education Minister Russ Marchuk joined students, teachers, members of the community and representatives from the Prairie Valley School Division to officially celebrate the start of a major addition and renovation to Lumsden Elementary School.

“The expanded Lumsden Elementary School will provide this growing community with a fantastic education facility that better meets the needs of students and their families,” Marchuk said.  “Our record investment in school infrastructure is bigger than bricks and mortar, it is about creating learning environments that support student achievement.”

The $10.5 million renovation is expected to be complete in September 2014.  The government is anticipated to contribute approximately $6.6 million over the life of the project.  The upgraded facility will be home to a new 51 space licensed child care centre, a larger gym and new gym services area, a performing arts centre, an expanded science lab, and a Learning Street (common area) that will serve as a gathering place for students.

“Infrastructure renewal is a key priority for the Board,” Prairie Valley Board of Education Chair Janet Kotylak said.  “To see construction of the new gymnasium begin brings a sense of excitement for the students and staff.  In addition, the new child care centre will benefit the entire Lumsden community and surrounding areas.”

Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $500 million toward 41 major school capital projects and approximately 860 additional smaller school capital projects across the province.
