GORDON BARNHART BECOMES PROVINCE'S 20TH LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Dr. Gordon Barnhart was officially installed today as the 20th Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.

In a ceremony held in the Legislative Chamber, Dr. Barnhart took his oath of office before Chief Justice E.D. Bayda and then was proclaimed Lieutenant Governor by Premier Lorne Calvert.

After the ceremony Lieutenant Governor Barnhart inspected a Guard of Honour from Joint Task Force West, followed by a 15-gun salute. A tea hosted by the Speaker of the Legislature followed the outdoor activities.

"Dr. Barnhart's new position is a perfect fit for a man whose career has combined lengthy public service with a dedication to educating people about Saskatchewan's history and governance," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "I am proud to welcome him as Saskatchewan's representative of the Queen and I know he will serve with distinction."

A noted historian and expert on governance, Dr. Barnhart's distinguished career includes a 20-year tenure as Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. He has also served as Clerk of the Senate and, more recently, as University Secretary at the University of Saskatchewan.

A prolific author, Dr. Barnhart has written many books about various aspects of Saskatchewan's history and its legislature. He has also shared his expertise on democracy and governance with elected officials and public servants in places such as South Africa, Russia and Vietnam.

Under the constitution, a Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the federal government for a minimum of five years, but there is no fixed term of office.
