CELEBRATING SASKATCHEWAN FOSTER FAMILIES

During Foster Families Week (October 17th to 23rd), the province formally recognizes and thanks the more than 700 foster families who provide a warm, safe and healthy environment for 1,600 children and youth.

"Foster families come from all walks of life, cultures, education and economic backgrounds," Community Resources and Employment Minister Joanne Crofford said. "They are a vital resource in our communities. Not only this week, but all year long we celebrate the important contributions of foster families in providing support to Saskatchewan children and youth."

"The benefits and rewards of being a foster parent are great," Saskatchewan Foster Families Association President Dave Leavitt said. "Foster parents make a real difference in the lives of children and their families through their generosity and the care and warmth they provide." The SFFA has provided an important support and voice for foster families in Saskatchewan for over 25 years.

Community Resources and Employment and the Saskatchewan Foster Families Association work together to provide a caring environment for children in Saskatchewan and support for foster families. Local representatives from each organization are also planning Foster Families Week celebrations in communities around the province to recognize the contributions of foster families in those communities.

More foster families are needed in Saskatchewan, particularly in Northern communities. As part of recruitment efforts, orientation sessions will take place around the province over the next couple of weeks.
