EIGHT VOLUNTEERS TO BE HONOURED

Today Lieutenant Governor Dr. Lynda Haverstock announced the names of eight citizens who will receive the 2003 Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. The Medal recognizes outstanding volunteer service or exceptional community involvement.

The recipients are:

Dr. Elizabeth Cooper of Regina, Associate Professor of Education at the University of Regina, who has dedicated 30 years of her career to women's issues, poverty and anti-racism;

Nora Cummings of Saskatoon, who has been a mentor in assisting Aboriginal women become aware of their rights in a variety of areas;

Voula Danakas of Regina, who has helped provide opportunities for the mentally handicapped so that they can develop work and life skills;

John Duerkop formerly of Saskatoon and now a resident of Kingston, Ontario, who has committed 30 years to preserving the history and heritage of Saskatchewan;

Raymond Girardin of Gravelbourg, who dedicates much of his time to promote his love of music and his French heritage;

John Humphries a recent resident of Regina, who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service in his hometown of Maple Creek;

Lori Isinger of Saskatoon, a former teacher who has left her mark in the areas of education, business and community projects; and

John Miller of Yorkton, who has been actively involved in agriculture and community service.

The Lieutenant Governor will present the medals during a ceremony at the Legislature on May 13th.

Including this year's recipients, 73 Saskatchewan citizens have been awarded the Volunteer Medal since its inception in 1995.
