News Release - June 11, 2005 AGRICULTURE AND ENERGY TOP CALVERT'S AGENDA AT WESTERN GOVERNORS' MEETING
Agricultural trade issues will be front and centre when Premier Calvert meets with the governors of several western U.S. states at the Western Governors' Association annual meeting in Breckenridge, Colorado, June 11th-14th.
"This meeting provides an opportunity to reinforce and press Saskatchewan's interests on various agricultural trade issues, such as BSE," Calvert said. "We need to continue the dialogue with our American colleagues on BSE, emphasizing that their own U.S. Department of Agriculture supports a resumption in cross-border trade in all live cattle and beef, and that the USDA's position is based on science." Premier Calvert will also use the meeting to profile Saskatchewan's energy industry and promote the province's commitment to conventional and renewable energy production, efficiency and innovation. "The meeting with western governors will also enable me to continue to promote regional intergovernmental co-operation in western North America, particularly in tackling the problem of addictions, including the use and trafficking of crystal meth," Calvert said. Finally, premiers and governors will discuss how they can work practically together on issues included in the new Security and Prosperity Partnership for North America agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico, especially in agriculture, energy, the environment and transportation. -30- For More Information, Contact:
