CALVERT EXTENDS SYMPATHY ON PASSING OF BEN HEPPNER

Premier Lorne Calvert today extended sympathy on the passing of Ben Heppner, MLA for Martensville. Heppner died yesterday in Rosthern following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 63.

"On behalf of the people of Saskatchewan, I extend my deepest sympathies to Ben's wife Arlene, their three children, grandchildren, family, friends and colleagues," Premier Lorne Calvert said.

"I have known Ben for many years. Although we were on opposite sides of the legislature, all members held him in high regard for his professionalism and dedication to the people he served."

In November 2005, Heppner introduced a bill to designate September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Saskatchewan, making our province the first Canadian jurisdiction to proclaim an entire month for awareness.

The Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Act, passed unanimously and reflects the importance of raising awareness of this disease for Saskatchewan men and their families. The Act took effect last December, after receiving royal assent.

"Ben fought a valiant fight against cancer and decided to use his experience to try to help others," Premier Calvert added. "He will be missed."

Flags at the Saskatchewan legislature and at provincial buildings in the Martensville riding are flying at half-mast to honour Mr. Heppner.

Flags will continue to fly at half-mast until sunset on Friday, the day of the funeral service for Ben Heppner. A Book of Condolence for his family will be available at the Legislative Building in Regina. The public can also express their sympathies by going online to www.gr.gov.sk.ca.
