News Release - September 10, 2004 PROVINCE WILL PARTICIPATE IN BSE STRATEGY
The Government of Saskatchewan responded to the federal government's new BSE strategy with an assurance that it will participate in the program to support Saskatchewan's livestock industry.
"Saskatchewan has been there for its producers since the BSE crisis began, and we will continue to support them through this most difficult time," Deputy Premier and Rural Revitalization Minister Clay Serby said. "We support the direction outlined by the federal government today, which is based on the excellent work of the industry, at the national and provincial levels, to develop effective, long-term solutions to the issues facing producers today." Serby noted that today's announcement addresses the key issues of opening the border, increasing slaughter capacity, sustaining the industry until that capacity is in place, and developing market opportunities. "In terms of a long-term strategy, today's announcement is very positive for our livestock industry, and that is good news," Serby said. "However, I am disappointed that this package again fails to recognize BSE as a trade issue, which is clearly a federal responsibility. The impact of this trade issue on Saskatchewan could range from $40 - $50 million. "The federal government has gone head-on with the U.S. on issues such as the Canadian Wheat Board and the softwood lumber dispute – why aren't they treating BSE with the same sense of urgency and gravity?" Serby said the Province will consult with provincial industry leaders on the new federal proposal to determine how to participate in a way that will address the priorities of the Saskatchewan industry. "We will continue to work with our industry to identify the next steps we need to take as a province to help our livestock producers through this most difficult time, and that will include our participation in this new national strategy." -30- For More Information, Contact:
