NEW ASSESSMENT AND STABILIZATION CENTRE FOR YOUTH OPENS IN NORTH BATTLEFORD

Vulnerable youth 12 to 15 years of age will have a better quality of life with the opening today of a new $1.9 million assessment and stabilization service in North Battleford.

Of this amount, approximately $868,000 in funding was provided through Human Resources and Skills Development Canada's Homelessness Partnering Strategy, with approximately $1 million contributed by the province's Ministry of Social Services and a donation of land from the City of North Battleford. The facility will be operated by the Eagle's Nest Youth Ranch, a community-based organization which operates similar programs in Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

"Our government is supporting many Canadians with housing needs and is helping those seeking to break free of the cycle of homelessness and poverty," said Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. "Through this investment, the City of North Battleford and its partners will be able to address the needs of local youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness."

"This project demonstrates our government's commitment to building brighter futures for Saskatchewan youth," Cut Knife - Turtleford MLA Michael Chisholm said on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer. "This program addresses a real need in North Battleford and surrounding area. We are pleased that vulnerable youth in this community will have a safe and supportive environment in which to create fulfilling lives."

"This program not only works with the youth, but also, when required, the young person's family," North Battleford Mayor Ian Hamilton said. "This strengthens the supports and resources the individual relies upon when reintegrating into the community."

The building, which will provide therapeutic group living for up to 10 youth, consists of individual bedrooms, a central living area and office space in a culturally-appropriate setting.
