MINISTERS RESPONSIBLE FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT MEET IN HALIFAX

Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister Darryl Hickie is in Halifax today and tomorrow to attend a meeting of federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for emergency management.

"Over the past four years, Saskatchewan has experienced more frequent and severe natural disasters than it has seen in the past 30 years," Hickie said. "I look forward to meaningful discussion on the agenda topics and I am optimistic we will leave here tomorrow with a renewed commitment to enhancing emergency management and public safety across Canada."

Hickie said participation in this meeting is one step in meeting the government's commitment to ensure Saskatchewan is an active participant in inter-provincial partnerships and joint approaches to emergency response.

The meeting is co-chaired by Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety and Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister of Emergency Management, Nova Scotia.

Over the next two days, ministers from across Canada will be discussing a national strategy for disaster mitigation, a national public alerting system, and a national strategy and action plan for critical infrastructure protection.
