News Release - May 26, 2003 MINE SAFETY IN SASKATCHEWAN IMPROVED
The Government of Saskatchewan is strengthening the safety of mine workers with new occupational health and safety requirements that come into effect in mid-July.
New mines regulations that are the result of six years of collaborative work by mine owners, mine workers and the provincial government will make mining in Saskatchewan safer," Labour Minister Deb Higgins said. "These regulations reflect best practices in modern mines. They set new standards for mine rescue and underground refuge stations, make provisions for improved air quality and deal with technological issues such as the increasing use of remote-controlled equipment." The Saskatchewan Mining Association and unions representing miners have expressed support for the new regulations. "Improving rescue plans, air quality and equipment standards are all positive steps forward," labour representative from the United Steelworkers of America on the Provincial Occupational Health & Safety Council Roy Howell said. "We support all measures to improve the health and safety of Saskatchewan mine workers." "We are pleased with the comprehensive consultation process undertaken during the development of the regulations," President of the Saskatchewan Mining Association Norm Beug said. "They should serve the industry well in the years to come." May 26th-30th is Mining Week in Saskatchewan. -30- For More Information, Contact:
