News Release - October 5, 2012 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK PROCLAIMED IN SASKATCHEWAN – HAVE 2 WAYS OUT!Today Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter has proclaimed October 7 to 13, 2012, as Fire Prevention Week. "Having a plan in place when fire strikes saves lives," Reiter said. "Fire Prevention Week serves as a great reminder for all Saskatchewan residents to take a moment and reflect on what their own family plan is in the event of fire. I encourage everyone across the province to take just a few minutes in the days ahead to sit down with their family to plan two ways out of their home and practice their escape routes." This year's theme Have 2 Ways Out!, focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and practice. Statistics from Fire Prevention Canada show that 78 per cent of deaths from fire occur in the home, with most of the fatalities taking place between 2 am and 4 am, while occupants are asleep. That is why it is critically important for families to develop an escape plan and react quickly in case of fire. During Fire Prevention Week, firefighters in communities across Saskatchewan will be raising awareness about the importance of having a home fire escape plan that prepares families to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds.
