SCHOOLS RECEIVE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FROM THE CLEAN CAT ROAD SHOW

A special launch performance of this year's Clean Cat Environmental Education Program took place at Glen Elm Elementary School in Regina today.

"The Clean Cat Program is a fun and exciting way for children from Kindergarten to Grade 4 to learn about the 4R's," Environment Minister John Nilson said. "We are fortunate to have renewed sponsorship from Waste Management of Canada Corporation and partnership with SARCAN, whose combined generosity helps us deliver the environmental education performances, and provides supplies for the schools to establish their own recycling centres and resources for the teachers to further educate students to develop environmental consciousness."

Members of the musical troupe Saskatchewan Express deliver a 45-minute performance. The Clean Cat mascot and friends use song, dance and dialogue to teach environmental responsibility to the children. The catch phrase "Make it a Habit" reinforces the principles of environmental action – practicing the 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover.

"Waste Management is pleased to support this worthwhile program for young children and to help convey Clean Cat's message that parallels Waste Management's own "Think Green" brand," Waste Management Director of Public Affairs Cam Hantiuk said. "We are committed to the communities we serve by participating in numerous activities and initiatives to promote sound and responsible environmental practices."

A total of 20 schools will be visited across the province between March 20th and 24th. Since 1991, Clean Cat has visited 592 schools throughout Saskatchewan, delivering the important message of environmental protection, preservation and sustainability to approximately 111,500 children.

The 2006 Clean Cat school performance schedule is attached.
