News Release - April 15, 2009 AN INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN GREENWATER LAKE PROVINCIAL PARKThe Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport is in the final stages of developing a Request For Proposals for the purchase and operation of 23 ministry-owned rental cabins located at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park. The rental cabins at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park are the only remaining rental accommodations owned and operated by government within the park system. All other rental accommodations have been sold or leased to the private sector, a process that started in the 1980's. "This is an opportunity for a private operator to develop these properties to their full potential," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Rental accommodations within provincial parks are considered commercial enterprises. The province's park system has been moving away from commercial enterprises for years and concentrating on the core business of operating one of the best provincial parks systems in the country." The Request For Proposals will include purchasing the 23 cabins that are currently operated by the park as rental units. Thirteen of the units are winterized and are open all year. The remaining ten are not winterized and operate during the summer. The conditions in the Request For Proposals will also include upgrading and expanding the rental operation to a minimum of 33 cabins. Depending on land availability, there is also potential for complementary developments. The successful proponent must also agree to honour all existing reservations. The cabins are expected to be transferred to the successful proponent in the fall of 2009. -30- For more information, contact: Art Jones |
