QUENNELL WELCOMES CREATION OF CHAIR IN POLICE STUDIES

Saskatchewan's Justice Minister Frank Quennell welcomed today's announcement by the University of Regina that a Law Foundation of Saskatchewan Chair in Police Studies will be established.

"The establishment of the chair will greatly enhance our work with police services to increase the participation of First Nations and Métis men and women in the administration of justice," Quennell said.

The Law Foundation of Saskatchewan Chair in Police Studies will undertake research and provide leadership for faculty and program development.

The Commission on First Nations and Métis Peoples and Justice Reform and the Commission of Inquiry into Matters Relating to the Death of Neil Stonechild both identified the need to recruit First Nations and Métis police officers.

The University of Regina's police studies program was established in 1999 as a partnership between the University of Regina and the Saskatchewan Police Commission, which is the governing body for the Saskatchewan Police College. Quennell said the work of the program, particularly in the area of recruitment of First Nations and Métis peoples, is important to the future of policing in this province.
