SASKATCHEWAN REMAINS STRONG IN URBAN HOUSING STARTS

New housing starts in Saskatchewan cities remains strong according to a report released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

Saskatchewan's urban housing starts were up 52 per cent in July 2010 when compared with last July, the fourth highest percentage increase among the provinces.

In the first seven months of 2010, urban housing starts in the province were up by 83 per cent when compared with the same period last year. Saskatchewan ranked third among the provinces during this time period.

"Residential construction growth is a key indicator that tells us Saskatchewan residents are benefitting from our strong economy," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "With job numbers up and an economy that continues to gain momentum, we are encouraged to see steady growth on the housing front."

Construction starts on multiple family units were up 693 per cent (up 104 units to 119 units), compared to July 2009. Single family dwellings were up by 11 per cent.

Saskatoon (CMA) new housing starts improved by 137 per cent in the first seven months of 2010 over the same period in 2009, while Regina (CMA) starts jumped 62 per cent.
