ELKRIDGE RESORT FINED $14,000 FOR SAFETY VIOLATIONS

The Elkridge Golf and Conference Centre Inc., near Waskesiu, has pleaded guilty to four charges under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and been fined a total of $14,000.

Elkridge Golf and Conference Centre Inc. pleaded guilty to:
• contravening sections 263(1) and 260(2)(c) of the regulations for failure to ensure that workers were protected from cave-ins or sliding material in a trench;
• contravening section 9(2) of the regulations for failure to notify the OHS Division of a dangerous occurrence;
• contravening section 17(1)(a) of the regulations for failure to ensure work was sufficiently and competently supervised; and
• contravening section 22 of the regulations and section 13 of the Act for failure to ensure it had an occupational health and safety program.

Two additional charges against the company were stayed in court.

The charges against Elkridge were laid after a golf course employee was injured from being partially buried when the sides of a trench collapsed during the installation of new water and sewer pipes, on October 9, 2008.

There have been 27 convictions for violations of Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety legislation in 2010-11, compared with a total of 11 in the previous year.
