TIMING IS RIGHT FOR SASKATCHEWAN MANUFACTURING WEEK MAY 26-30

Saskatchewan's manufacturing industry, which is a driving force behind the province's current nation-leading performance in international export growth, is being recognized for its importance and contribution to the growing economy.

The province is presently number one in Canada in terms of international export growth, and number two in manufacturing shipments value growth. Saskatchewan Manufacturing Week, taking place May 26-30, involves a number of public and private events around the province acknowledging current performances and best practices, as well as sharing new and proven ideas for enhancing this industry even further in Saskatchewan.

"The timing is exactly right to take a good look at what our innovative and successful provincial manufacturers have done and continue to do for Saskatchewan," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "Our economy is very much export-based, and the prosperity and growth we are currently experiencing has a lot to do with the companies across the entire province that design, build and market their Saskatchewan-made products all over the world for a vast range of purposes."

The manufacturing industry employs approximately 31,000 people in Saskatchewan, or about 6 per cent of the working population. Nearly one half of the industry is located outside of the two major cities, representing a well-dispersed base and a strong foundation for rural and regional economies. Saskatchewan manufacturers are recognized around the world for their agricultural implements; wood, primary and fabricated metal products; mining and industrial equipment; satellite, wireless and landline communication products; weigh-in-motion scales; ambulance, transportation and defence equipment; and specialty buildings.

Saskatchewan's growth in exports for March was the highest percentage increase in Canada (seasonally unadjusted) as was the growth rate for the first three months of 2008. Saskatchewan's manufacturing shipments experienced the second highest increase in Canada (seasonally unadjusted) in March as well.
