HUMBOLDT AND NEARBY COMMUNITIES BENEFIT FROM INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT

Humboldt and seven nearby communities will benefit from a $1.4 million investment for infrastructure projects from the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan through the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

This announcement includes funding for the City of Humboldt to upgrade its sewage station.  The Town of LeRoy will be able to construct a new lagoon and the Town of Watson can expand its water reservoir.  In addition, the rural municipalities of Aberdeen, Grant, LeRoy, Spalding and Wolverine will use their funding to upgrade grid roads in their area.

Saskatchewan Justice Minister Frank Quennell on behalf of Government Relations Minister Harry Van Mulligen and Bradley Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification, announced the investment today.

“Canada’s New Government is getting things done for people in the Humboldt area,” Trost said. “This $1.4 million investment ensures these communities can build better wastewater systems, increase their capacity to store water and upgrade roads in their communities.”

“Today’s announcement of funding from the province of more than $700, 000 for eight projects in Humboldt and area demonstrates the Saskatchewan government's commitment to supporting infrastructure and creating a strong future for our province,” Quennell said.  “We are dedicated to making life better for Saskatchewan families of today and to building an even better future here for our young people.”

Before receiving final approval, community projects undergo a review process under both the Canadian Environment Assessment Act and The Environmental Assessment Act (Saskatchewan). 
 
The federal and provincial governments are investing a total of $76 million in the four-year Canada-Saskatchewan Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.  Participating communities are expected to contribute one-half the cost of any project, which will raise the total infrastructure investment to more than $152 million.
