CD HELPS ABORIGINAL FAMILIES DEAL WITH SEPARATION AND DIVORCE

An interactive CD program to help Aboriginal parents and children cope with separation is now available in Saskatchewan.

"This innovative program puts valuable information in the hands of parents so they can help their children feel safe and loved, even though their parents are separating," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "I am pleased that we are able to make this CD available widely to Aboriginal individuals, organizations and communities. This project also responds to the Commission on First Nations and Métis Peoples and Justice Reform, which called for government to offer parenting education for Aboriginal people."

The CD, entitled Kids in the Middle: Parenting After Separation for Aboriginal Communities was produced by Saskatchewan Justice, and is based on a handbook developed by the Law Courts Education Society of British Columbia. The program includes short videos and information that parents can use to ease children through the separation process. Each section of the program concludes with worksheets that help parents think about and prepare a positive plan for themselves and their children.

The CD was officially launched during the 3rd Annual Northern Health Conference, organized by New North – Saskatchewan Association of Northern Communities, in LaRonge March 8th to 10th.

The CD will be distributed to Aboriginal family and community services agencies across Saskatchewan. It will also be shared with organizations and governments in B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and the Yukon Territory. Justice Canada provided funding for the development and production of the CD.
