NEW POLICE COMPLAINTS INVESTIGATOR FOR SASKATCHEWAN

Former Saskatchewan Justice Minister Robert W. Mitchell, Q.C., has been appointed as the new police complaints investigator for Saskatchewan effective July 1st, 2004.

"I am pleased that Mr. Mitchell has accepted this important position within the Justice system," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "He will be an asset to the administration of justice and police complaints process."

Mitchell will be replacing Elton Gritzfeld, Q.C., who has served as complaints investigator for the past 11 years.

"Mr. Gritzfeld has made a great contribution to the police complaints process over the past 11 years and I thank him for his hard work and dedication to the administration of justice in Saskatchewan," Quennell said.

Under The Police Act, 1990, the complaints investigator is an independent civilian who reviews public complaints about municipal police services.

The Saskatchewan Department of Justice will be reviewing the current public complaints process in consultation with the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan, the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police and the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers. Mitchell will contribute to that review.
