GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES WINNER OF FIRE PREVENTION WEEK CONTEST

One winner has been selected from thousands of entries in the annual Fire Prevention Week contest for elementary school students in the province. Students entered the draw with entry forms found in fire prevention activity books provided to schools across the province.

Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert presented this year's winner, six year old Braden Kentel, a student from Hoffman School in Langenburg, with a home computer. A cheque for $400 was also awarded to the school.

"The participation in this contest from students and staff at elementary schools across Saskatchewan is overwhelming," Huyghebaert said. "I congratulate Braden and all students for promoting the importance of fire prevention in their schools, families and communities."

"I am proud to be a part of a community dedicated to success and a vision for the future," Agriculture Minister and Melville-Saltcoats MLA Bob Bjornerud said. "Communities around the province will benefit from the dedication of local fire departments to teach young children how to avoid starting fires and how to escape in emergencies."

More than 27 thousand Kindergarten to Grade three students in 175 communities participated in this year's contest.

The theme for this year was, "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned" and focused on burn awareness and prevention, as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires.
