CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 6TH

Farmers have seeded 90 per cent of the 2004 crop, up from 80 per cent a week ago, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's weekly crop report.

Wet conditions in southeast and south-central regions have caused delays. Seeding around Oxbow, Bengough and Assiniboia is less than 50 per cent complete.

Many areas received rainfall this past week, with eastern regions receiving the highest amounts. The Yorkton and Moosomin regions received as much as 60 mm. Just under 73 per cent of crop land has adequate topsoil moisture, up from 63 per cent last week. Many southeast regions report surplus topsoil moisture, while west-central regions continue to report shortages.

Cool weather has delayed crop development across the province, with 61 per cent of reporters indicating that spring cereal development is behind normal. Oilseed development is rated as behind by 63 per cent of reporters, while 53 per cent rate pulse crop development as behind. About 45 per cent of reporters rate fall cereal development as behind normal.

Flooding has caused crop damage in the southeast region. Other sources of crop damage include grasshoppers, flea beetles and other insects, drought, wind, disease, and gophers. Spraying to control weeds and insects is beginning.
