ANNUAL SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE HONOURS VETERANS

A wreath was laid this morning at the Saskatchewan War Memorial by Premier Brad Wall as part of the government's annual Service of Remembrance for the Public Service.

"Today, we gather to honour, remember and reflect upon the sacrifice of the men and women from the province of Saskatchewan who have diligently and proudly served our country, in military conflicts and peace keeping missions around the world," Wall said. "Let us never forget."

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the Liberation of Netherlands, a key operation for the Canadian Forces in WWII, in which soldiers from across Canada, including the South Saskatchewan Regiment, fought to free the county which was occupied by Axis forces and in the grip of a severe famine.

The actions of the Canadian Forces not only saved millions of lives within the country but also helped to bring about an end to the war in Europe.

Recently, 15 individuals from Saskatchewan who made the ultimate sacrifice were honoured and remembered by the unveiling of a special Afghanistan plaque that has been added to those individuals inscribed at the Legislature's war memorial. Honoured on the new plaque are:

  • Captain Nichola Goddard
  • Corporal Bryce Keller
  • Master Corporal Jeff Walsh
  • Corporal David Braun
  • Corporal Shane Keating
  • Corporal Jordan Anderson
  • Corporal Cole Bartsch
  • Corporal James Hayward Arnal
  • Master Corporal Joshua Roberts
  • Corporal Dustin Wasden
  • Sergeant Prescott Shipway
  • Sergeant Darby Morin
  • Lieutenant Justin Boyes
  • Lieutenant Andrew Nuttall
  • Michelle Lang

The Saskatchewan War Memorial is located on the Legislative grounds just west of the Legislature on Memorial Way and includes the WWI Memorial and the Memorial for WWII, the Korean War, the Afghanistan Mission and Peace Keeping Operations.
