CENTENNIAL LEGACY ART PIECES INTRODUCED

Residents, visitors and travelers passing through Saskatchewan's four gateway communities have another reason to stop and enjoy the scenery.

Four outdoor, permanent art installations were recently introduced to the Saskatchewan landscape as centennial gifts from the province. Each piece is distinct and calls attention to characteristics reflective of the host community, their surrounding areas and the province.

"These four art pieces are gifts for the entire province to enjoy," Saskatchewan Centennial Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "We're pleased that these unique and beautiful pieces will represent our centennial spirit for years to come and will welcome our many visitors to our province."

The four legacy art pieces have been installed in the communities of La Ronge, Lloydminster, Yorkton and Estevan. On behalf of Saskatchewan Centennial 2005, the Saskatchewan Arts Board conducted the call for artists, administered the adjudication process and worked with the artists through the project. La Ronge is the host community for Chris St. Amand's "Portage". The border city of Lloydminster is home to Douglas Bentham's "Sky Dance" and Estevan received Jefferson Little's "Spinning Prairie". "Doorways to Opportunity" by Lionel Auburn Peyachew was installed in Yorkton. Each piece showcases the diversity of Saskatchewan's artistic community and highlights different characteristics of our province and the host communities.

"Art is an important method of defining ourselves and expressing ourselves as proud Saskatchewan people," Saskatchewan Arts Board Executive Director Jeremy Morgan said. "To help celebrate their achievements and in recognition of Saskatchewan's centennial, we are proud to have been involved in presenting these gifts to the people of our province."

Additional information on the art installation, including photos, is available on Saskatchewan Centennial 2005's website at www.sask2005.ca.
