IMPROVING COMMERCIAL FISHING FACILITIES

Improvements to facilities used by the commercial fishing industry are planned

for northern Saskatchewan.

The provincial government's Centenary Fund is contributing $700,000 toward

improving lakeside facilities in support of harvesting, packing and shipping of

fish from northern lakes to provincial, national and international markets.

The infrastructure program will be managed by the Saskatchewan Commercial

Fishermen's Co-operative Federation Ltd. (SCFCFL), in co-operation with

Saskatchewan Northern Affairs.

"These facilities will support the primary objective of the province's northern

strategy – a diversified and sustainable northern economy," Northern Affairs

Minister Keith Goulet said. "This program is part of the government's

continuing effort to address the importance of commercial fishing to many

northern communities."

Local commercial fishing co-ops and associations throughout the north are

encouraged to apply for the program. Grants of up to $50,000 will be approved

for those applications that best meet criteria developed by the Federation and

Saskatchewan Northern Affairs.

Support will be provided for projects that help maintain the delivery of high-

quality fish to markets, increase use of underutilized species and fish stocks,

and enhance the value of the commercial fishery to fishers and the provincial

economy. Individual commercial fishing associations will participate in

funding projects approved for their regions.

"We have been pleased to work with Saskatchewan Northern Affairs in developing

this program." SCFCFL President John Carriere said. "It will assist many

northern communities to maintain their participation in the industry."

In 1998-99, about 600 fishers harvested 3.5 million kilograms of commercial

fish valued close to $5 million. Commercial fish species include whitefish,

northern pike, mullet, lake trout and walleye.
