News Release - April 20, 2006 NEW LEGISLATION TO HONOUR POLICE AND PEACE OFFICERS
Corrections and Public Safety Minister Kevin Yates today announced the Second Reading of The Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Day Act in the Legislative Assembly.
"It is with pleasure that I rise today to endorse this new legislation," Yates said. "Our government is proud to formally recognize the selfless contributions of fallen police and peace officers, and to honour those currently serving. I look forward to formally participating in this event, which will take place the last Sunday in September." There are currently over 600 police and 100 peace officers on the Honour Roll. In 2005, seven fallen officers were added to the Honour Roll. Of the over 700 fallen officers on the Honour Roll, nine individuals are from Saskatchewan. This national Memorial Day will be honoured every year in Saskatchewan and across Canada to varying degrees, with the most significant event being held on Parliament Hill. -30- For More Information, Contact:
