PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HELP A REGINA FAMILY ACHIEVE HOMEOWNERSHIP

A Habitat for Humanity Regina partner family are homeowners, thanks to a total of $50,000 in funding assistance from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The family was presented with keys to their new home at a special ceremony held in Regina today.

"Building homes for families in need is one of many reasons why we are so proud to support Habitat for Humanity," Regina Walsh Acres MLA Warren Steinley said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "It is people from all backgrounds coming together to help families build a brighter future for themselves, something Saskatchewan people are well known for. We look forward to many more Habitat homes to be constructed as we work together to move Saskatchewan forward."

"Partnerships in our community make projects like this come to life," Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said. "We are grateful to Saskatchewan Housing Corporation for their solid commitment to low-income, hard-working families who seek homeownership through Habitat for Humanity. Saskatchewan Housing Corporation provides funding for every home built by Habitat across the province. Coupled with generous donations, such as the $100,000 from Conexus Credit Union, the funding provided will help many families break the cycle of poverty."

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert and Lloydminster to help build a total of 90 homes across the province. Saskatchewan Housing Corporation has advanced $2.4 million of the $4.5 million available to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province to assist in the delivery of 48 homes for families. Habitat for Humanity anticipates 30 starts throughout Saskatchewan in 2012.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions. In return, their lives are transformed by the positive experience of working with the Habitat for Humanity community and by the many benefits that come along with homeownership.
