News Release - May 4, 2004 CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 2ND, 2004
Saskatchewan farmers have seeded six per cent of the 2004 crop – up from the five-year average of two per cent for this date, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's weekly crop report.
Around the province, 18 per cent of the crop is planted in the southwest, with six per cent in the southeast, and four per cent in the west central region. Precipitation was recorded in northern areas, as well as some southwestern, east and west-central areas, slightly improving topsoil moisture conditions. A lack of precipitation continues to adversely affect other areas in the southwest and west-central regions. The May 1st Stubble Subsoil Moisture map shows improved subsoil moisture compared to November 1st, 2003 in most of the eastern half of the province. Strong winds have caused soil erosion in a number of areas around the province, particularly in west-central areas. Pre-seeding field work continues, although winds and cool soil temperatures have caused delays. Pastures and hay lands need rain and warm temperatures to generate grass growth. -30- For More Information, Contact:
